Hi All,

Let's get back to Spider's question:

Earthquake prediction codeðics
Posted by Spider on March 27, 2000 at 10:19:18:

According to the European seismological Commision code of ethics a seismologist should not make any predictions public and should report these to the local governments prediction council and to the ESC for evaluation. What happens if a European citizen/scientist uses this page to issue predictions anonymously ? Is this agains the laws and regulations ?
Enlighten me on this one please.

I belive what Spider is asking is whether an *official* European earthquake alert posted on this page would be in violation of the European Seismological Commision's code of ethics.

I agree with Canie that it probably could be seen that way.

However, were a new European, say "Gretl Tuminelli" suddenly to show up on this board, and make a few predictions (as many here do), and were these predictions to have a fair degree of accuracy, would I start paying attention to them? You bet.

Now, were Gretl a European seizmologist hiding under a pseudonym (as some here do), a real identity might be traceable through an email address.

But perhaps "Gretl" were actually a friend of a friend of a European seizmologist, acting on a tip from a friend? :-)

Frankly, I wouldn't care if it were the Man in the Moon making predictions, if they he a fair degree of accuracy, I'd pay attention to him.

An example: See the post I'll be posting soon above.
