You didn�t give the latitude, or at least I don�t think you did so I sort of winged it. I used the latitude of Arguello Canyon and the longitude you gave and did a quake search. The first search is an 80Km radius from 34.35/-121.5. As you can see the further west you go the fewer quakes there are. The second search is from 34.35/-121.7 using a 40Km radius so as not to overlap the first search to any great extent. As you can see there are not quakes west of 34.35/-121.6973. The most logical reason for this is that there were no sufficiently large enough quakes to be accurately recorded.

What I found interesting is that there are periods in which no quake of M=4.0 and larger occurred. One period was in the 50s and the other in the 70s with only two quakes occurring between then and present date. Have no idea as to what this might mean, or that it means anything at all.

Smart move on the mate�s part. A confrontation with an oil tanker would have been one that you couldn�t win. Sounds like you�re having a ball. I envy you on one hand, but on the other hand I don�t with the seasickness bit. Some of my friends tell me a turn a pale green just watching a movie of a ship at sea.
