Wegener was actually wrong in much of his ideas. Many beside him had
noticed the continental edge match. The problem was that no one could
think of a way for the breakup to happen. Wegener proposed that the
continents floated on the denser mantle and drifted apart over time but
couldn't say why.

It wasn't until the convection cell concept was proposed that the driving
force was accepted but the final blow came with magnetic lineations. They
proved that it HAD happened. And that was in the 1960s. I was fortunate
enough to see Lynn Sykes give a talk about the subject.
