link to North Palm springs EQ |
The link is to an animation of aftershocks of the 1986 North Palm Springs earthquake...looks like moderate N dip like the recent one. Amother link gives the dip as 45 deg (http://db.cosmos-eq.org/scripts/event.plx?evt=40) but nearly pure right-lateral. But, the SCEC Community Fault models, at least the older version that I have, shows the Banning fault as vertical. But, that is liable to be wrong. There is a recent (3 years??) paper by, I think, Carena and Suppe that does detailed 3D imaging of quakes in this area....I don't have time to dig this out right now (if I have it at all..) and it would be interesting to see what they have near this recent M4.9...Let's see...does this all matter? I think so...bears on whether the recent quake weakened or strengthened the San Andreas strands in this area...and where...
