Ice Breaker - The Love Wave

Hi All!

Seems alls to quiet so I thought I'd bring up one of my favorite topics, The Love Wave. While you can imagine where my mind has been, thinking of some geologist out in the field and coming back to the office and saying, "I caught the Love Wave." It conjers up so many thoughts of romance and geology, however, like all things in science, there is no romance in the love wave. Though I'd like to catch the love wave, well, its hard to get there in the dead of winter when its raining all the time.

So what about these Love waves? They are surface waves, for those who are unaware and they are very damaging to home foundations from their side to side motions on the horizontal plane, but at right angles to the direction of propagation. I have yet to determine who the author is of the name of the Love wave.

However, if we are going to talk about surface waves, then we can't forget to mention Rayleigh waves either. As surface waves travel slower than body waves, of the two, Love and Rayleigh, the Love wave travels faster. The Rayleigh waves are a rolling motion. In an earthquake they travel both vertically and horizontally in a vertical plane.

Love waves don't propagate in water, whereas Rayleigh waves do. The Love waves will travel across the top of water, and the Rayleigh waves through the water.

I think I got that right! Anyway, anyone who wants to add to this, please do so. Or if I got something wrong, please don't be shy, tell me.

So one day, I hope I catch the Love wave and see what it feels like. Of course, if I catch Rayleigh first, I'll be sure to let you know.

Smile, Its Thursday, soon to be Friday....Pat
