Sargent fault, Mt. Madonna Area |
Hi All. Took a tour of the Mt. Madonna area today. Didn’t have anything else better to do. I stopped at the Sargent fault. Sure doesn’t look like a fault. At least not what you think one should look like. They think this fault may have moved a little during the Loma Prieta quake. Still no hard figures for it though. There is also the same kind of thinking about the Monte Vista thrust fault. Nothing has been found at the surface of either fault. Not to far from the Sargent fault just south of Gilroy they open an old oil well. They are pumping oil from it now. The hole is a little over 15,000 feet deep. As kids we use to go there to catch a fly for biology classes. Seems the fly could land on the oil and never get stuck to it. Now that is adapting to the situation. USGS gave me the locations of 4 seismographs and they also told me that if there is any triggering it would most likely be near the surface. Two of the seismographs are within 3 Km of the well. If the company can get a lease on the property next to it they are going to open the other well. I understand that the second well is about 18,000 feet deep. Should be interesting to see what develops down the road in a couple of years. The oil is low in sulphur so that makes it a little less costly in refining. Other then making more money I have no idea as to why they reopened them. They haven’t been in operation for more then 50 years. Just north of where I live there is a natural gas well. It has been in operation for about 40 years now. It’s privately owned. Have no idea as to where they pipe the gas. Take Care…Don in creepy town Follow Ups: ● Re: Sargent fault, Mt.
