Re: More About Parkfield - My Opinion

Hi All,

This article closed with a rather Ying-Yang effect. At one point they are saying they can still activate earthquake alarms to the public and then they say there is little hope for short term prediction. Umm.

And why should we lose hope because they had the wrong kind of instruments in Parkfield? Those instruments were obviously designed for reaction when a quake occurs, not before. Of course at the time they were installed they didn't know that, but I would imagine that a long time ago they had a fairly good idea that was the case. I'm not sure the rest of you noticed, but there was a lot of information out about sympathetic micro earthquake activity and that is what seemed to hold a lot of attention for the last 5 years before the 6.0.

So in the end we should not say that short-term prediction is not possible because the instruments in Parkfield failed, but rather it means everyone should look in a new direction and learn from this project, both from the positive efforts and the negative outcome.
