Re: 6.4 south of equator in Sumatra |
Petra...for all I know instrumentation has already been done....but then again, maybe not so much south of equator? I'm guessing. Maybe wife in suburbia or the seismologist will reply...or maybe John V. will have something to say. Seismometers can be put in very quickly....but someone has to want to do it and usually the person who does it would want to be paid...and getting funding for something like this can take a year or years....unless the NSF Program director thinks it is an emergency or whatever and frees up some funds (but such funds would be limited). Continuous GPS is probably much more expensive and could be more tricky. And, if permits are required, who knows how long. If the Indonesian government decides to do things and had the instruments...could all be done quickly.... But...I have not really done any deep thought about what is needed in the way of monitoring .... and it is a bit out of my field....John? Also......while it would be good to get monitoring into effect quickly....what if the quake does not occurs for decades? Running over there and putting in a temporary deployment for a few months might see some interesting stuff but is likely to miss the great quake...
