lava dome continuing to grow during 25 March to 1 April, gas-and-steam plumes rising to 4 km on several days, between 5-28 March a new lava extrusion adding ~50 m height to the SW part of the lava dome

ST. HELENS Washington, USA 46.20°N, 122.18°W; summit elev. 2,549 m (low)
growth of the new lava dome inside the crater continuing, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash, a series of large (equal to or greater than M 3) earthquakes during 3-4 April

VILLARRICA central Chile 39.42°S, 71.93°W; summit elev. 2,847 m (low)
during 29 March to 3 April the lava lake inside crater active, with Strombolian explosions occurring, some as explosions observed to hurl volcanic bombs as far as ~300 m

Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S

ANATAHAN Mariana Islands, central Pacific Ocean 16.35°N, 145.67°E; summit elev. 788 m (15.2 km)
on 5 April around 1700 an explosive eruption, producing an ash plume to an initial height of ~15.2 km, on 5 April about 1200 increased ash on satellite imagery, and a lower level ash plume at ~4.6 km blowing SW; the plume extending more than 465 km, Earth Probe TOMS on 6 April at 0046 showing a compact sulfur-dioxide cloud drifting E of Anatahan following the eruption, during 31 March to 4 April small explosions every one to several minutes; steam-and-ash plumes drifting ~200 km, and vog (fog composed of volcanic gases) drifting ~400 km at altitudes below ~2.4- 4.6 km

CANLAON Philippines 10.41°N, 123.13°E; summit elev. 2,435 m (3.4 km)

SPECIAL NOTE

The change in format is to emphasize numbers for use in comparisons with future and previous weeks. This is especially critical as Sunspot Minimum approaches, with previous rises in the number of big earthquakes.
