Shan's Distance & Indonesia Developments

Hi Chris,

I put the predicted site and the coordinates for the actual epicenter into the distance calculator and here's the results:

Distance Calculation Results

Distance between 5.65S 102.69E and 2.06N 97.01E is
662.0973 statute miles

On the way home from work this afternoon Lind Gee of UCB Seismo Lab was on the radio and gave a rather interesting report. She said that today the classification of new earthquakes versus aftershocks has changed and this earthquake is now being considered an "aftershock." She said this is a relatively new development and apparently came about today. She said also that earthquakes were expected at either end of the rupture zone from the Banda Aceh quake and apparently this area had increased stress, much like the Landers, Big Bear events were previously.

The 5 o'clock evening news said there were now 1,000 confirmed dead and the death toll was expected to be 2,000.

Then I had to laugh because they mentioned a 3.0 quake occurring n/e of Calistoga and there are no 3.0 quakes on the USGS maps or lists for that area today. That would be around ten miles from my port of call.

Does any of the above make anyone feel like we cannot be on hold forever and it's time to prepare for and earthquake of our own? I hope.

Petra
