Planetary Geomagnetic A Indices: high of 21 on 14 March; five or more Kp's of 4 (or more) per 24 hours: eight on 7 March; high no. of Kp's of 3 per 24 hours this week: six on 10 March

(Data is upgraded at the source as needed without notice.)

Northern Ash and Gas Eruptions north of latitude 23°N.

CHIKURACHKI northern Kurile Islands, Russia 50.325°N, 155.458°E; summit elev. 1,816 m (2.2 km)

increased volcanic activity on 12 March, on 1 March a gas-and-steam plume rising to ~2.2 km, on 12 March another ash plume

KLIUCHEVSKOI Russia 56.06°N, 160.36°E; summit elev. 4835 m (7.6 km)

on 17 March ash emitting continuously on satellite imagery to a height of 7.6 km

ST. HELENS Washington, USA 46.20°N, 122.18°W; summit elev. 2,549 m (low steam from 10 March)

a small but significant explosion occurring on 9 March at 0125 and producing a fine dusting of ash in Ellensberg, Yakima, and Toppenish, Washington during 0300-0500 UTC, by 1000 on 9 March, the leading edge of the faint, diffuse plume reaching western Montana; the lava dome intact after the explosion but ballistics up to ~1 m in diameter hurled as far as the northern flank of the old lava dome, the source of the explosion from the NNW side of the new lava dome and very near the source of the 1 October 2004 and 16 January 2005 explosions; after the 8 March explosion only steam emitted, emissions very low, essentially unchanged from late February

SUWANOSE-JIMA Ryukyu Islands, Japan 29.53°N, 129.72°E; summit elev. 799 m (1.8 km)

an explosion on 9 March producing an ash plume to a height of ~1.8 km

Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S

COLIMA western México 19.514°N,103.62°W; summit elev. ~3,850 m (8 km)

an eruption on 10 March at 1410 producing pyroclastic flows that traveled up to 3 km down the volcano's flanks in all directions and an E-drifting ash cloud to a height of ~5.8 km; on 13 March at 2128 a large explosion producng a pyroclastic flow down several ravines with an ash plume rose to ~8 km

KILAUEA Hawaii, USA 19.43°N, 155.29°W; summit elev. 1,222 m (0)

on 15 March only small areas of surface lava flows visible on the Pulama pali fault scarp, and the amount of lava in the three branches of the PKK lava flow continuing to decrease; lava continuing to enter the ocean at the Ka`ili`ili and East Lae`apuki ocean entries

MANAM offshore New Guinea, Papua New Guinea 4.10°S, 145.06°E; summit elev. 1,807 m (low)

on 15 March a thin plume visible on satellite imagery

POPOCATÉPETL México 19.02°N, 98.62°W; summit elev. 5,426 m (5.9 km)

during 9-15 March occasional emission of steam, gas, and small amounts of ash; an ash emission on 9 March at 1904 producing a plume that rose to ~5.9 km above the summit crater and drifted E

RABAUL New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea 4.271°S, 152.203°E; summit elev. 688 m (low)

low-level eruptions continuing at caldera's active Tavurvur cone during 9-15 March

SOUFRIÈRE HILLS Montserrat, West Indies 16.72°N, 62.18°W; summit elev. 1,052 m (low with gas)

seismicity at low levels during 4-11 March, the sulfur-dioxide flux remaining around the same level as the previous week, with an average of 695 metric tons recorded daily; during the week a strong sulfurous smell noticed across the northern part of Montserrat, MVO attributing this to a deviation from the normal prevailing wind direction

TUNGURAHUA Ecuador 1.47°S, 78.44°W; summit elev. 5,023 m (low)

during 9-14 March volcanic and seismic activity at relatively low levels with low-energy gas-and-steam plumes emitted

ULAWUN New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea 5.04°S, 151.34°E; summit elev. 2,334 m (low)

volcanic activity relatively low on 8 March, but seismicity increasing; 15 March a faint plume visible on satellite imagery

All ash elevations are in km above sea level (a.s.l.) and times are converted to UTC.
