The color change happens when your computer records in temp files that you have read the message. Most computers have been set to delete temp files at some period in time. Otherwise your hard drive would simply get overloaded with those files and slow down to a crawl. There are ways to manually change it, but the time you would have to devote to it would probably outweigh the benefits.
