The Santa Cruz Island whoomphing

This post is not a joke on my part..I used to do a lot of field work on Santa Cruz Island. There is a landslide (a rock avalanche of Monterey Formation) that I had dated at a little over 13,000 years...that crosses the Santa Cruz Island fault. The Santa Cruz island fault is a left-lateral fault that is aligned with and is probably the same fault as the Malibu Coast fault. I'm at work today to finally submit a paper that includes the Malibu Coast fault. So, I spent a lot of time in the landslide area trying to figure out whether strands of the fault offset the landslides. And, more than once I heard a very strong low frequency whoomphing sound...not at all like ear tones. I can't remember if I had a field assistant who heard it also. Gee...I guess some of you will think the sound was being emitted from the fault. That's not my guess...right next to the bottom of the landslide was a navy acoustic station, with cables leading into the ocean. I assume I was hearing sound they were emitting underwater. The station is not there anymore...removed entirely (this is Valley Anchorage).
