what is going on on rupture size?

early on Don stated and I agreed that the northern aftershocks were separate from the main quake. But, since then there have been large aftershocks over the entire range across 11 deg of latitude, and I have been suggesting, perhaps incorrectly, that the whole distance may have failed. The link shows a preliminary rupture model where the rupture is 450 km-long...and it looks like maybe 150 km wide. The maximum slip is 20 m in a small area...and may average 10 m. But, the link does state that it includes only the first 220 s of rupture and it might have broken farther north after that...with smaller slip......the slips and rupture area are important to such things as how often this part of the plate boundary can have this size quake. The figures do show nicely that there is a lot of SW-facing plate boundary to the southwest of this recent quake.....I don't know when it failed last. Chris
