my latest email to CNN

Hey guys and gals....my little contribution to doing something about this disaster is to work on the media...the below is an email to the errors page of cnn.com

I previously reported wrong explanations by CNN meteorlogists for tsunamis.....this was repeated 10:15 PM eastern or so Sunday Dec 26. The next morning a different CNN meteorologist "explained" tsunamis...he was not wrong...but the explanation was still lame. Finally, later on Monday the original meteorologist got it right....but everyone is missing the point. First, why are you having meteorlogists explain earthquakes when it is obvious that they have no clue? Do you get geologists to explain hurricanes? I am a California registered geologist, and in California it is illegal to be paid for professional services that you are not qualified to perform. You have all been missing the point on this quake...which is the size of the rupture...that it is 1000 km long or more (or could be), and that it could be very wide...100 km or more is possible. All you do is talk about epicenters, which for these large quakes are not important...it is just where the rupture started. If you had anyone who understood any of this, you would realize that if there were 10 m tsunamis at Sri Lanka, that the size could be very much larger locally in certain places above the rupture. Start using qualified people for stories this important! I did not hear your coverage until 14 hours after the quake...but you had an opportunity to save lives if you had anyone on call who understood earthquakes and tsunamis. I suspect you failed in this.

I would like to hear back from a real person on what you plan to do. I can not be reached on the phone number above until Friday, but will see my email Thurs evening.

university research geologist, but doing this as concerned citizen.
