RECENT VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS
Northern Ash and Gas Eruptions north of latitude 23°N.
MIYAKE-JIMA Izu Islands, Japan 34.08°N, 139.53°E; summit elev. 815 m
volcanic activity at Miyake-jima from the summer of 2000 continuing through early December, the sulfur-dioxide flux remaining high through November 2004, with 3,000-10,000 tons emitted per day, constant since October 2002, on 30 November a minor eruption after a 2-year lull, several minor eruptions following, the most recent eruption occurring on 9 December
ST. HELENS Washington, USA 46.20°N, 122.18°W; summit elev. 2,549 m
during 8-14 December growth of the new lava dome continuing and accompanied by intermittent emissions of steam and ash, consistent with a continuing, slow rise of magma driving uplift of the crater floor and feeding the extrusion of lava onto the surface, the overall low rates of seismicity and gas emission suggesting the lava reaching the surface gas poor, aerial views of the crater on 11 December showing the new lava dome increasingly fractured as a new, ambiguous, pattern of growth emerging
Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S
COLIMA western México 19.514°N,103.62°W; summit elev. ~3,850 m
during 8-14 December explosions continuing, on 13 December plumes drifting NE
ERTA ALE Ethiopia; 13.60°N, 40.67°E; summit elev. 613 m
on 4 December new activity within North crater with a solidified lava bulge filling about 4/5 of the crater floor and degassing from several small hornitos, during
the evening ten small incandescent vents visible, in the morning two plumes rising above the volcano
FUEGO Guatemala 14.47°N, 90.88°W; summit elev. 3,763 m
several small explosions during 8-14 December, producing plumes to ~4.4 km, small
avalanches of volcanic blocks
KILAUEA Hawaii, USA 19.43°N, 155.29°W; summit elev. 1,222 m
during 8-14 December surface lava flows visible along all three arms of the PKK lava flow, by 13 December lava entering the sea at the E Lae`apuki delta, all vents were incandescent in the crater of Pu`u `O`o
MANAM offshore New Guinea, Papua New Guinea 4.10°S, 145.06°E; summit elev. 1,807 m
during 8-14 December moderate eruptions, satellite imagery of a plume at a height of ~4.6 km
NYIRAGONGO Democratic Republic of the Congo 1.52°S, 29.25°E; summit elev. 3,469 m
faint sulfur-dioxide plumes visible on satellite imagery on 8 and 10 December
SANTA MARÍA Guatemala 14.756°N 91.552°W; summit elev. 3,772 m
during 8-14 December weak-to-moderate explosions, producing plumes to a maximum height of 5.3 km, block-lava avalanches continuing
SOPUTAN Sulawesi, Indonesia 1.11°N, 124.73°E; summit elev. 1,784 m
an eruption on 11 December around 1650 producing an E-drifting ash cloud to ~2.8 km, an eruption cloud visible on satellite imagery on 12 December at 0125 at a height of ~10.7 km
TUNGURAHUA Ecuador 1.47°S, 78.44°W; summit elev. 5,023 m
during 12-14 December small-to-moderate explosions, emissions of steam, gas, and small amounts of ash to a maximum height of 7 km
All ash elevations are in km above sea level (a.s.l.) and times are converted to UTC.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Reports on Volcanoes
This Digest uses the earliest available reports on volcanic activity. There is a monthly summary published by GVN, usually a couple of months later. These and other reports are available at
