It's nestled on the south side of the Santa Monica Mtns., so if the basin includes the San Fernando Valley and the L.A. Basin, then no, it's right in the middle. But Sylmar is at the very north end of the basin.

I read about the motion later. Much was made of the 58 seconds. I'd sure like to know from someone here if that was actual quake motion or included waves bouncing around.

The Sepulvada Dam was cracked, and much worry ensued that it would break and flood some of the southern cities in the San Fernando Valley, but it didn't.

As for g force, things were definitely thrown into the air, me included. ALL the water in the dorm's swimming pool was emptied. The tile in the lobby was cracked, windows were broken, and there was a lot of personal items lost, but for the most part, the building held up very well.
