Re: Building For The Next Major Quake |
I'm touched Petra! I will update the board here if anything does occur in our area. If we can get power and an internet connection! We do have power from the car and cell phones that will connect to te laptop. I'm surprised at the folks who still think standing in a doorway or rushing outside is the proper thing to do... I do agree with Don in that building for the quake is a very good way to minimize damage. Kerry Seik also did a great presentatin bringing that same point home. The unfortunate thing, is that in the countries that aren't so economically well off, they just can't afford to do anything other than build their brick domiciles back on top of the remnants of the ones that just collapsed and killed their family members... We are very fortunate in this country that we are able to build to withstand these forces of nature. I feel pretty safe about Long Beach - not much movement along the Newport-Inglewood fault... I've done what I can to make the house safe and have got some supplies (though rotating them might be a good idea right now). I do want to check one other thing on our foundation though. It is bolted, but I don't know if there has been plywood sheets put in to strengthen the cripple walls. So another project for the house. Below is a great resource for living in earthquake country - it appears to have been updated and has great info for preparing and living with earthquakes.
