RECENT VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

Northern Ash and Gas Eruptions north of latitude 23°N.

ASAMA Honshu, Japan 36.40EN, 138.53EE; summit elev. 2,560 m (?)

at 1410 on 10 October a plume to an unknown height.

ETNA Sicily, Italy 37.73°N, 15.00°E; summit elev. 3,315 m (lava)

emission during 6-11 October from vents around 2,620 m and 2,350 m elevations, lava flowing in several arms and in tunnels

ST. HELENS Washington, USA 46.20°N, 122.18°W; summit elev. 2,549 m (?)

following a steam-and-ash emission on 5 October, during 6-12 October, seismicity at low-to-moderate levels with the highest magnitude earthquake M 2.4, on 6 October only weak steam puffs, the top of the area of intense uplift at or slightly above the highest point on the lava dome, a light dusting of ash on 5 October affecting the eastern part of Mount Rainier National Park, ~110 km NNE of St. Helens, a new steam vent openiing during the evening of 6 October, joining two that had been present for several days, the total volume change represented by the deformation between late September and 6 October at ~16 million cubic meters, the average rate of change ~2 million cubic meters per day, observations consistent with new lava having reached the surface of the uplift, gas-sensing on 11 October measuring fluxes of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide similar to those measured on 7 October

Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S

COLIMA western México 19.514°N, 103.62°W; summit elev. ~3,850 m (4.2 km)

during 6-11 October block-lava flows continuing as they have since 30 September, on 6 and 11 October plumes to ~4.2 km

FUEGO Guatemala 14.47°N, 90.88°W; summit elev. 3,763 m (4.4 km)

during the evening of 9 October a narrow lava flow; a small sustained lava fountain ~75 m above the volcano during the evening of 10 October, on 12 October a narrow lava flow and plumes to ~4.4 km

GALERAS Colombia 1.22°N, 77.37°W; summit elev. 4,276 m (5.8 km)

during 8-11 October emissions of gas and fine ash plumes to a maximum height of ~5.8 km

KILAUEA Hawaii, USA 19.43°N, 155.29°W; summit elev. 1,222 m (lava)

on 11 and 12 October patches of incandescent lava visible on the PKK lava flow on the Pulama Pali fault scarp and all vents in the crater of Pu`u `O`o were incandescent, a M 4.0 earthquake at Kilauea's summit at a depth of ~32 km on 11 October at 2030 that affecting tilt meters, but the volcanic tilt minor

MAUNA LOA Hawaii, USA 19.475°N, 155.608°W; summit elev. 4,170 m (0)

during about 4-11 October only 23 earthquakes, down markedly from previous

RINJANI Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, 8.42 S; 116.47 E; summit elev. 3,726m (4.5 km)

an eruption on 30 September at 2330, during 2-4 October thick gray ash plumes to heights of ~4.5 km

SANTA MARÍA Guatemala 14.756°N, 91.552°W; summit elev. 3,772 m (5.3 km)

on 11 October a partial lava-dome collapse producing a pyroclastic flow, an ash cloud to a height of ~4.3 km covering most of the dome complex, the collapse preceded by an explosion and an ash-and-gas cloud to ~5.3 km, small explosions on 12 October producing small lava-dome collapses and generating avalanches of lava blocks and ash

SOUFRIÈRE HILLS Montserrat, West Indies 16.72°N, 62.18°W; summit elev. 1,052 m (gas)

volcanic activity at slightly elevated levels during 1-8 October, the sulfur-dioxide flux between 187 and 1,144 metric tons per day, with a weekly average of 462 metric tons per day

TUNGURAHUA Ecuador 1.47°S, 78.44°W; summit elev. 5,023 m (low)

volcanic activity during 11-12 October were at relatively low levels, emissions mainly steam and gas with small amounts of ash

All ash elevations are in km above sea level (a.s.l.) and times are converted to UTC.
