6th storm headed for Florida, 9th Typhoon to Japan

IMHO this is not really off topic...You get a big quake, and now seismologists agree that you are likely to get more quakes in the region...not just local aftershocks. So, one might want to think about what in quake occurrence are statistical flukes, and whether what I discuss below is statistical flukes or are guided by the way large scale weather systems (locations of high pressure centers, for example) have set up this year.
Tropical Storm Matthew just formed in the Gulf of Mexico, and is forecast to hit the Florida panhandle as a 40 mph tropical storm. But, there is a bit less than 10% chance that it will be a minimal hurricane instead (www.nhc.noaa.gov). This will be the 6th tropical storm to hit Florida in 2 months, of which 4 were hurricanes, of which 3 were major hurricanes.

Meanwhile, Japan, which is a bigger target than Florida, has had something like 8 or 9 Typhoons this year, and a super-typhoon (160 mph) is forecast to hit near Kyoto-Tokyo tomorrow morning Eastern time...as a weaker, but still major, typhoon.

Just to annoy DH, I linked to a page that shows that hurricanes this year have only been hitting counties that voted for Bush in 2000, and generally spared counties that voted for Gore. Jeanne has almost the same path as Frances, and Matthew is forecast to hit near the path of Ivan. By the way, the path of Ivan is not accurate on the link.....

Perhaps someone would want to do this for California earthquakes and counties that voted for Bush?
