Hi Don - i just thought I'd try to add something - I think I understand what you are asking - (but maybe not..) - there are 2 locked areas of the san andreas fault down here.. the 'bends' - near palm springs and tejon pass area.. There has been some talk that the quakes occurring out further east (like Hector mine) might be as a result of the san andreas being locked up and the main fault (or plate boundary) trying to find a new path for itself by going east 'around' the bend...
