its a competitive field

Chris,

I can't say that every PhD gets a good job in the field. A number are jumping ship for lucrative computer or finance jobs. They all get good jobs somewhere.

However, I think the research is fun, and a faculty job is hard to beat for always learning something, often teaching, job security, and actually being a world's expert in a tiny niche. Plus universities are always humming with activity, if one can stand being twice as old as most of the denizens.

There is more research than ever with EarthScope gearing up and SCEC chugging along, and InSAR and LIDAR joining GPS as a way to see new phenomenon in the Earth.

I do show my general class that EOS article, and claim to have shaved when it came out, although it's not true.

I try to hide my odd and peculiar side, and I tossed that History of Physics spam today, too.

John
