1906 Earthquake Centennial Alliance

Hi All,

Though 2006 seems like a long time from now, there are many that have been shoulder to the wheel planning a series of events to remember the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. The attached link to the 1906 Earthquake Centennial Alliance provides a view as to people, places and events, which are already under commitment, and surely leaves the door open for others to be added.

One thing I think we should think about besides the magnitude of this earthquake, is the length of time in which it took place. At one minute, 15 seconds, it was an entire minute longer than the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

In looking to matters which have changed and may not be repeated, we should rest somewhat more comfortably in knowing that those who have purchased earthquake insurance would be more likely to receive full policy benefits than those after the 1906 earthquake. At that time, those that filed claims received approximately 10 cents on the dollar when insurance companies failed. Today California has a Guarantee Insurance Fund. This fund is financially supported by policyholders that pay a dollar or two on their fire insurance policies when necessary. Presently, if any insurer runs out of money, the guarantee pool will cover claim payments. However, those who purchase coverage through the new California Earthquake Authority may end up coughing up addition premiums following an earthquake.

All in all, I'm delighted these events are coming our way because I know information throughout the San Francisco Bay Area will generate more earthquake awareness. And to that I have contacted the Steering Committee and suggested Public Service Announcements to add something that will last beyond the remembrance events.
