Recent Volcanic Eruptions: TWO GROUPINGS



Northern Ash and Gas Eruptions north of latitude 23°N.



KIKAI [SATSUMA-IWO-JIMA] Ryukyu Islands, Japan 30.78°N, 130.28°E; summit elev. 717 m

an eruption around 0205 on 13 August producing a plume to ~1.2 km



SHIVELUCH Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 56.653°N, 161.360°E; summit elev. 2,283 m

during 6-13 August gas-and-steam plumes to a maximum height of ~2.9 km



SPURR southwestern Alaska, USA 61.299°N, 152.251°W; 3,374 m

elevated seismicity during 6-17 August, as for several weeks, on 12 August a pilot report of ash in the Hayes River valley N of Spurr, but no evidence of an eruption in seismic or satellite data, subsequent pilot reports, or from visual observations



VENIAMINOF Alaska Peninsula, USA 56.17°N, 159.38°W; summit elev. 2,507 m

during 6-13 August frequent small ash-and-steam emissions visible on web camera not exceeding a height of 3 km



Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S





FUEGO Guatemala 14.47°N, 90.88°W; summit elev. 3,763 m

during 11-16 August dozens of weak-to-moderate explosions, plumes to a maximum height of 5 km



GALERAS Colombia 1.22°N, 77.37°W; summit elev. 4,276 m

on 12 August at 0449 an ash-and-gas cloud to a height of ~10.7 km, later a thin plume at a height of ~7.3 km, a plume also at a height of ~6.1 km



KILAUEA Hawaii, USA 19.43°N, 155.29°W; summit elev. 1,222 m

during 11-17 August surface lava flow visible on Pulama pali, lava had not entering the sea since 4 August



PITON DE LA FOURNAISE Réunion Island, Indian Ocean 21.23°S, 55.71°E; summit elev. 2,631 m

an eruption on 13 August, fissures with 2- to 3-km-long lava flows



SANTA MARÍA Guatemala 14.756°N 91.552°W; summit elev. 3,772 m

during 11-16 August several explosions producing ash plumes to ~4.8 km



SEMERU Java, Indonesia 8.11°S, 112.92°E; summit elev. 3,676 m

on 10 August ash at a height of ~6.1 km



SOUFRIÈRE HILLS Montserrat, West Indies 16.72°N, 62.18°W; summit elev. 1,052 m

volcanic activity at low levels during 6-13 August, the sulfur-dioxide flux varying between about 125 and 300 metric tons per day, averaging 200 metric tons



TUNGURAHUA Ecuador 1.47°S, 78.44°W; summit elev. 5,023 m

volcanic activity at low levels during 11-17 August, emissions of gas, steam, and ash to ~6.5 km



ULAWUN New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea 5.04°S, 151.34°E; summit elev. 2,334 m

a thin plume visible on satellite imagery at a height of ~3 km on 14 and 15 August
