Re: Interesting activity up north

Hi Dennis & All,

In looking at the maps today I was wondering if the events near Lake Shasta are building much the same as they did in Oroville, before the 5.7 occurred and similar to the Lake Nassar 11/14/81 5.6 earthquake.

In both cases the reservoirs were built with no sign of fault in the area, however, as time progressed small fractures around the area developed. It is suspected that leaks from the reservoirs seeped into those faults and may have triggered the earthquakes that subsequently occurred. In both cases, "b value" measurements confirmed there had been changes in those areas.

So if this area is to follow like the others, in causatives, we should expect an earthquake in the general range of a 5.6 to 6.0, however, very unlikely, anything greater. If not occurring in the next 30 days, I would think when activity begins at the coast once more, then its possible the area will become active again. Seems to me from past observations the activity at the coast often times brings on activity inland, probably subduction zone induced.

Just some thoughts....Pat
