M3.3 offshore SW of Santa Monica Mountains |
Another offshore southern California quake....a M3.3 about half way between Catalina and Santa Cruz Island. It is a little NE of a large right-lateral fault....the Santa Cruz-Catalina Ridge strand of the San Clemente fault system. Old acoustic (seismic) data show a reflection that dips NE on this fault. Many strike-slip faults offshore southern and south-Central California are not vertical, because they reactivate older normal faults. The strike-slip faults tend to have a vertical part in the upper 1-3 km. There seems to be quite a few offshore quakes the last few weeks....but, this may be getting us back to normal?
