As for amplification of seismic waves, was this a product of the 1971 Sylmar EQ? That thing lasted 58 seconds (you think Loma Prieta was long) and seemed to get much stronger before it subsided. We had aftershocks for 5+ years. I lived in Westwood Village. UCLA, our common stomping ground.
