Re: San Juan Bautista Tensor Strain

Hi Steve. A quake the size of the one we had Monday may not be sufficient enough to cause an increase in creep. There is also the chance that it didn’t occur on the San Andreas Fault. The quake appears to be in the area where the Vergeles Fault meets the San Andreas Fault so the Vergeles Fault can’t be ruled out as the cause of the quake.

As for the tensor strain. If this is good data that is related to a quake in the making then when should see a sudden drop in strain anywhere from 4 to 20 hours or so before the quake. I can’t be sure on this though as I have never seen tensor strain related to a quake in the San Juan Bautista area.

If a quake is going to occur it could be anywhere from a couple of miles to about 20 miles from the data point. This has been the case in the past. It depends on the size of the quake that may be building. It will usually be associated with the fault that the data site is covering. I don’t think I have ever seen a quake occur off the fault.
