Hi John. I bet there are some quake history buffs thinking about the 1927 Lompoc quake right about now. The 1927 Lompoc quake was quite a jolt. It registered as a M>7.1. It was felt from Morgan Hill south to Redondo Beach and from the coast east to Kernville. A tsunami was recorded on tide gages at San Francisco, La Jolla, San Diego, and Fort Point, and waves were observed at Pismo, Port San Luis (1.5 meters), and Surf (1.8 meters). The first wave was recorded as positive at all of the California coastal stations that noted it. That would just about rule out a thrust fault. There were many aftershocks to that quake. The fault that caused the quake is uncertain, but it possibly could have been the Hosgri Fault.
