San Andreas fault system

Part of the problem is that we use the term "San Andreas fault system" for everything from Owens Valley to the offshore-meaning the broad diffuse plate boundary. A reporter is liable to misquote this as the "San Andreas fault". I'm a little more bothered by the coverage that it is on the San Simeon fault. Since some aftershocks may be on the San Simeon fault, but the earthquake was not, it is important to keep this distinct. I called CBS radio a couple of months ago when they repeatedly called the solar flare a solar eclipse. And I was fairly angry at CBS radio when the totally miscovered a major plane crash in NY a couple months after 9/11/01. They said it was on landing, when it was on takeoff, and got some other important information wrong. When you are trying to judge whether it is a terrorist attack, this makes a difference. Or, when you are expecting someone to be landing at JFK at that time (which I was not, but you get the problem). Chris
