Earthquakes And Nuclear Testing

Hi All. The total number of known nuclear explosions from 1945 to 1994 was 2,036. Data from the Lop Nor testing facility in Western China shows a maximum earthquake of 5.0Ms. This was taken from the Love and Rayleigh waves which are surface waves. It would take 35,937 nuclear bombs all detonating at the same time to release the same amount of energy as one 7.0Ms quake. It has been said by some that nuclear detonations have triggered some large earthquakes and there are some who say they don’t. Knowing the source for these statements helps. Those who say they do are for the most part anti-nuclear and those who say they don’t are pro-nuclear. U.S. S.U. Nuclear Notebook is prepared by Robert S. Norris and William M. Arkin of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Inquiries should be directed to: NRDC, 1200 New York Avenue, N.W., Suite 400, Washington, D.C., Using the NEIC quake catalog starting in 1973 and ending November of 2003 there was a grand total of 456 earthquakes of M>7.0 and larger. 1973---13 1974---14 1975---15 1976---17 1977---13 1978---16 1979---13 1980---14 1981---13 1982---10 1983---14 1984---8 1985---14 1986---6 1987---11 1988---8 1989---7 1990---12 1991---11 1992---23 1993---16 1994---15 1995---25 1996---22 1997---20 1998---16 1999---23 2000---20 2001---18 2002---13 2003---16 to date. As one can see there were fewer quakes in the 80s, but this doesn’t mean that this was caused by nuclear testing. There can be other factors not known such as a normal quiet period, or a cycle that isn’t known to us. Statistics are all well and good, but I have learned that there are times they can mean only what the person with the statistics wants them to mean.
