I was in a 100 year old unreinforced masonry building in downtown Petaluma on the second floor when Loma Prieta hit. Boy,it moved like crazy. According to local seismic engineers the magnitude in Petaluma was around a 4.5.

People are far more scary than EQ's. People are unpredictable in their behavior, while earthquakes will always be simply earthquakes. A force in which the ground shakes and its up to people to get out of the way.

As Roger Bilham said, "earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do."
