flares and quakes

Roger sent me his correlation between flares and quakes. It was for number of M5 quakes by days after the 26 largest solar flares. There is a little higher occurrence of quakes a few days after a flare. Hard to tell how significant, but because of the number of flares and the number of quakes, I think you could make a significant statistical correlation. On the other hand, you are not much more likely to have a quake a few days after a X9+ flare-the peak is only a little higher than the average (and there are a couple other peaks almost as high, which may show the variability).

Of interest to me, since I made a comment on possible East Africa M5+ tomorrow or the next day, is that for 2 of the 3 biggest flares (before this week's), there was a M6+ quake in East Africa that followed it. But, that correlation did not hold for the rest of the biggest flares.......so, 2 out of 3 is statistics of small numbers. What we need to look at is magnetic storms of the magnitude of the ongoing one-which has been continuously "red" for 48 hours and "extreme" for 3 x 3 hour periods.

The ideas we are looking into are those of Lowell Whiteside-who has posted these ideas on this page in the past.
