(Source data can change without notice or correction.)

BOON'S FIVE RULE: FIVE EARTHQUAKES OF FIVE.X MAGNITUDE IN FIVE DAYS CAN CAUSE A VOLCANO TO ERUPT ASH AND/OR GAS UP FIVE MILES.

Earthquakes of 5.0 to 5.9M thru Wednesday--12;
two quakes of 6M or greater: 10/08 6.7M HOKKAIDO, JAPAN REGION, 10/07 6.2M SAMOA ISLANDS REGION

Volcanic ash over 5 mi (8 km)--Ecuador, Mexico

Sunspot No. high--104 on 3 October

Smallest to largest daily total area of sunspots--330 on 5 October from 830 on 2 October

(100 equals a Planet Earth area.)

X-Class Solar Flares: none detected; last M-Class flares (5/day) 8 on 11 June (see ticker for fewer MC, if any)

Planetary Geomagnetic Indices: high of 16 on 2 October; last set of K-Indices of 4 or more (5 or more/24 hours) before 17 through 26 September

Moon for October per Astronomy Magazine

2 first quarter, 10 full, 13 apogee, 18 last quarter, 25 new, 26 perigee

The moon is at
apogee (252,085 miles far) on 13 October.

The ORIONID METEOR SHOWER peaks before dawn on 21 October.

Applying the FIVE Rule is discussed in SPECIAL NOTE.

SPECIAL NOTE

Applying the FIVE Rule

Following a recent eruption of Miyake-jiwa I posted in the Digest my observation that volcanic eruptions could follow multiple 5M quakes. It doesn't happen all the time. 6M quakes didn't seem to do the job. The quakes did not necessarily occur at the volcano. The susceptibility to eruption, similar to the situation for earthquakes, seems necessary. The energy of the quake source can be focused. Here is a study of the height (km) of American ash eruptions in the two weeks before and after the 8.3M quake near Hokkaido, Japan, on 25 September (for more details see above Recent Volcanic Eruptions in this and applicable earlier issues:

Week 9/11-17 9/18-24 *8.3M* 9/25-10/1 10/2-8 Volcano

COLIMA 26, 7.3km 9, ~8.5 km

FUEGO 28, ~6 km

MASAYA 4, ~4.6 km

POPOCATÉPETL 21, ~7 km?

SANTA MARÍA 28, ~4.3 km

SOUFRIÈRE HILLS 5-12, low low 30-1, 2.5 km

TUNGURAHUA

15, 7(2) km

19-26 active; 22, 8 km

25, 8.1; 26, 7.6; 27 and 28,7; 1, ~9 km

2, 7.9; 3, 6.1; 7,8, 8.2; 9, 8.5 km

Notes: Kilauea is not included as it had no ash eruptions.

Anatahan, an American Pacific Island, had no ash eruptions

All volcano reports tend to be incomplete because clouds can obscure visibility of eruptions to both satellites and local cams.

Conclusion: Five American volcanoes on a global direct line from Hokkaido became active following the Hokkaido eruption, and Tungurahua on that line became more active. Popocatepetl had a questioned emission before the 8.3M and none after. Soufriere Hills off that line remained at low activity. Hokkaido remains active at the 5M and 6M levels, with five 5M quakes from 6 to 9 October. California is on that quake energy line, with continued past week quake count in the high 200's and a 4M quake off Punta Gorda, northern California, reported above.
