Chris, I forgot to answer part of your question. The most precise tidal calculations assume the elastic structure of the Earth is like the reference model PREM, so no lateral variations in stiffness or density, which is a pretty good assumption for the wavelengths and frequencies of the tides. Tidal calculations are routinely compared to crustal strain measurements and tidal measurements to ensure the approximations are not a problem. John
