Isn't it Cortez (with a 'z') Bank? Or are they 2 different locations? I guess they are the same location and either spelling works - I'm just used to Cortez Banks... Maybe its that California history...

As for writing skills, it does sound good but I wouldn't usse the word enormous & system twice in a row.
How about: resulting in a massive system of anticlines and faults? or enourmous system of anticlines and faults - or ...
Massive structure of anticlines and faults... or..

Are the anticlines really ABOVE the faults? Wouldn't the faults be within and around the anticline? (weaknesses in the crust forming the anticline?) - i guess you can have anticlines and no faults if things weren't too brittle... But I think I've always seen the two together.

I also found this reference as for a reason for the waves:
Following the formation of an intense low pressure system north of Hawaii last weekend, Sean Collins of surfline.com accurately forecast Wednesday's arrival of a solid long-period groundswell to coincide with light winds at the Cortes reef. Dated Nov 8, 2002 (http://www.surf.co.nz/newsletters/index.asp?newsletterId=1516&archive=85)
So that rather refutes the no surfing since 2000...
