Madera Quakes

The first thing I did was checked the ANSS catalog for past quakes. Using a minimum magnitude of M>2.0 and a radius of 20 miles I found that there has been ongoing quake activity in the area. The largest quake was an M>4.6 about 10 miles south of Madera. It occurred on 01/22/1972. The first quake recorded in the area was on 10/14/1938. The next quake to be recorded in the area was on 07/11/1960. Not sure as to why the large gap. However from the 1960s to present time there have been quakes recorded almost every year.

It is interesting to note that geoForecaster had a forecast for this area for a quake up to M>3.7 for 05/30/2003. They missed it by 14 miles. It also occurred 4 days before the forecasted date.

As for the faults. I found two of them south of Madera. They aren’t named and there is no history for them. From the location on the map and the location of the quakes it doesn’t appear that the most recent quakes occurred on these faults. The M>4.6 in 1972 does appear to have occurred in the area of the two faults. Take Care…Don in creepy town
