Re: Earthquake politics - Not Really

Hello EQF,

I have to say I do not agree that geo-scientists are politically motivated. I've meant many of them up close and personal and so far, I see no evidence of this behavior at all.

Of my blessings during the past four years, I feel marvelously grateful for the time many scientists have given to me to explain small details, point out the big picture, explain the financial siutation and watch the sparkle in their eyes when they talk about their work. Not only that, you will not find a group of people who are so dignified, devoted to their work and their families.

I've met all but one of the Parkfield original group and some of the newbee's, all but two of the Nature Debaters and everyone of these people deserve a round of applause. They are dedicated, mostly open minded and at least willing to hear what a novice has to say and politely disagree at times.

On my first AGU Awards night I met a wonderful scientist from UCSB who explained the ceremonies to me and how everything worked and then we talked about fractals. He didn't treat me with any lack of respect because I'm not a scientist nor any of the others. I have always felt welcomed and always treated well.

For the most part, I try to remain neutral because I want to learn and understand something I don't know nearly enough about. There are couple of scientists out there who clued me into something that was really important once and for that I shall forever remain humbled by their willingness to help me out.

One very thoughtful scientist who sits in Menlo Park spent about 30 minutes with me one day and it changed my path and direction to earthquake preparedness. I think I made the right choice and I am thankful for his time and the important words he imparted to me.

I think it is time for you to provide some praise for the work that has been done which has a direct influence on what you are working on today. If the information was not out there, it would be most difficult to produce the programs you are working on.

To the scientists who read this board, I hope you know this is a message of Thanks. I never take anything for granted and my appreciation for your time is very well remembered. You gave me a gift that will last for a lifetime.

And so it goes.....Petra
