Study Shows Southern California Could Be Hit By Much Larger Quake Then Thought

Hi All. “A suite of new studies examining the Denali earthquake reveals that it was actually a composite of three smaller quakes that began on one fault, skipped to a second and then moved on to a third”

“The findings suggest a similar situation could arise in seismically analogous Southern California, where a rupture on the Sierra Madre thrust fault could trigger an earthquake on the strike-slip San Andreas Fault. In strike-slip faults, two blocks move past each other in a horizontal fashion to produce earthquakes. Thrust faults do so when one block pushes upward over another, as if moving up a ramp.”

Keep this in mind. In the Bay Area we have two thrust faults. One is the Monte Vista Thrust Fault and the other is Mount Diablo Thrust Fault. There may be a third located just to the east of the Rodgers Creek Fault. There is insufficient evidence to say with a doubt that there is.

If this could happen once it could always happen again. Of course this depends on the geometry being correct. Take Care…Don in creepy town
