About earthquake prediction

While the bickering continues on the board - I'd like to add a few thoughts of my own.

It is my thought that there are many, many clues produced by mother earth prior to an earthquake and that we humans just haven't figured it all out yet.

I believe there are many factors involved - there is the plate motion first and foremost, motion in the mantle, existing faults, gravitational data, magnetic and geomagnetic data, solar data (multiple radiation/proton levels), tidal data, animal behavior (what is it they are sensing?), human behavior, ELF, ULF... And on and on... I'm sure I missed a few items here.

The point I'd like to make is that I don't think any one piece of data by itself, is going to be the key to earthquake prediction. There is a slight correlation between full moons and quakes or tides and quakes, or solar flares and quakes, or even quakes and quakes...but any one by itself isn't definitive.

I think all the data (including what is not mentioned here - strain rates, past historical events, plate tectonics models, etc) needs to be able to be run together by some large computer system that can then spit out some prediction to what appears to be chaotic just because there's too much data.

One thing I have to say for EQF - at least he's keeping summaries on all possible causes - There was a summary page on his site about possible precursors that have come along I think - and he's trying to correlate between multiple data types and some event. From what I understand, he's collecting various data bits - someone then has to analyze those data bits to come up with a prediction of some sort - that's what he hasn't the time for... I think his main way to determine a location is using solar and moon location data? Like many have said, I don't think it is a strong enough correlation - but I'm sure if we keep hammering at this in a friendly manner, we might make some headway.
