Earthquake and tornado discussion IRC anyone?

Once every few weeks I detect an earthquake or tornado type warning signal, or learn about some earthquake research project which I would be interested in discussing with other people. However for a number of reasons I would prefer that the discussion be conversational and not permanently stored anywhere. Spelling and grammar mistakes etc. in notes posted to Internet Newsgroups and bulletin boards last forever. Also, you can cover more territory with a conversational format.

Would anyone be interested in learning how to use IRQ so that they could join in discussions like that if and when any were ever held?

IRQ is easy to use. It is something like those instant messenger services but a little more technical and controllable. A regular time for meetings is agreed upon. And/or, someone can circulate an e-mail note or post a note to a bulletin board proposing that people join the group at a certain time. It has a name like #quaketalk. An existing name group can be used. Or a temporary new one can be started by entering a name. The group then ceases to exist when the last person disconnects from it.

As far as I am aware, you can be largely anonymous in the group. You simply choose a nickname of your choice and use it to identify yourself.

It is also easy to get running. You can download any of several programs including at least several free ones. They have to be used with a “firewall” program and you should also probably have a virus protection program. There is at least one free and easy to use firewall program available for download. And although virus software might not be necessary I believe that some can also be obtained for free.

If you are interested in discussing this then post a note here or contact me through one of my Web sites such as http://www.freewebz.com/eq-forecasting/131.html
