Earthquake triggering Web page update

This earthquake triggering data Web page has now been updated with some additional explanation information including a short section related to earthquakes and underground nuclear tests.

The purpose of that page is to demonstrate to researchers around the world that the times when certain earthquakes are occurring are the same times when easily observed and measured events such as crests in Solid Earth Tide vertical displacements are occurring. The hope is that they can use that type of information to determine how earthquakes are being triggered, and how destructive ones might be forecast.

The following is a discussion of that report’s underground nuclear test section for the benefit of people who do not want to read through the Web page report. This subject matter has been discussed by different people over the years.

My 2001.html Web page looks at data for that year only. However I myself am looking at data for the years 1990 to the present. Earthquakes with magnitudes of 7 and greater were divided into a number of groups. And I found that there were none in the 8 magnitude and greater group for the years 1990, 1991, and 1992. The first one in that range occurred in August of 1993.

That absence of high magnitude earthquakes looked unusual until I remembered that several years ago I saw a report written by someone who observed that very high magnitude earthquakes were not occurring during the years when nuclear tests were being conducted. So I checked the following Web page and saw that the last 120 kiloton yield nuclear test in a series of tests which lasted for years was conducted on September 23, 1992.

It could be proposed that the nuclear tests were somehow preventing very high magnitude earthquakes from occurring. And they began to occur once again about a year after those tests ended.

Finally, for some time now I have had a general plan in place for both showing researchers around the world how they can learn how earthquakes are being triggered, and how they can be forecast. And each report such as that 2001.html Web page which I am storing at one of my Web sites usually represents a step in that plan. The subject matter is complex. I am still learning quite a bit about it on a regular basis myself. And all of this is taking a fair amount of time. But, progress is actually being gradually made.
