Re: Did you know...Northern Calif quake commentary |
Hi Canie. That is a site I use quite a bit. Not as informative as I would like it to be, but better then most. Using it as well as the commentaries from USGS you can get a pretty good idea as to what is going on in the neighborhood so to speak Rick McKenzie and Lind Gee were the two people who gave Petra and I a tour of their lab. I must admit I was somewhat surprised as to how simple it was. I fully expected to see a lot of seismographs, but there were only two. If memory serves there were also only two computers. However there were about 50 seismographs in which data was sent to the lab by various methods. We were told that the seismographs in the northern most part of the State where going to be changed as the equipment was getting old. Petra learned how to read and understand the GPS data, which so far she hasn’t taught me how to use it. I’ll have to have a talk with her about that. Lind and Rick were both very gracious in answering our question. That also included the non-intelligent ones. One thing we learned was that they were also concerned about the lack of M>5.0+ quakes in the Bay Area. They didn’t say why, but the answer was quite obvious as Petra and both have the same concern. While an M>5.0 here and there won’t prevent the next major quake the lack of them to me is an indication that there is a lot of stress building in the area. Anyway that is my feeling on that subject. Petra didn’t get to see Memento Mori, as it was located at another site. Anyway Mori is nothing more then a seismic detector with a feed to a computer, which has a program in it that changes the data to a signal that we can see. Lind explained that most of the stuff we see on Mori is due to the wave action along the coast. Atmospheric pressure changes can also be seen. All in all it was an enjoyable tour one that I recommend taking if you get the chance.
