Don,
I agree with most everything you said. One quibble is Northridge. There is a fault to the east that was mapped, and another to the west, it just wasn't known how they connected in the middle. So while no one considered it the next most likely place to break, for the reasons you state, that we don't know the stresses down there, it wasn't a shock either.
