Hi Canie,

Sometimes the world is like one mind. So here's a news article from the Marin Independent Journal which gives us pause to wonder why those in Mexico don't retrofit, when we in the richest country in the world don't......Petra

"The entire Bay Area is an earthquake zone," said Mary King, ABAG president. "It is time for the Legislature to fund a statewide public information campaign to teach our citizens about the risk of earthquakes and the value of retrofitting."
Other key findings of the ABAG report include:

Every Bay Area county is significantly affected by at least two earthquake faults.
If the entire San Andreas fault moves as in 1906, almost 160,000 units would be rendered uninhabitable.
If the Hayward-Rodgers Creek fault ruptures, more than 108,000 housing units would be uninhabitable.
If the entire Hayward fault slips, almost 156,000 units would be uninhabitable and 360,000 people would be forced from their homes.
ABAG surveys show that most homeowners are not retrofitting.
Multi-family housing such as apartments are at most risk.
"I think a big quake is inevitable," said Valerie Quigley, coordinator of Marin's Office of Emergency Services, who attended yesterday's conference. "I think we will see it in our lifetimes. Marin is surrounded by faults. It's naive to think it won't happen. There will be activity on those faults."
