Eruption of Reventador Volcano, Ecuador

The Volcano Reventador about 60 miles norteast of Quito Ecuador erupted on November 3 and is continuing to this time. The cloud of hot ash forced closure of the Airport at Quito and a newby highway while showering Quito
with volcanic ash.

No injuries were reported from the eruption. Reventador is a 11,686 foot high volcano located at 0.078S 77.656W on the eastern slope of the Andes. The eruption began at about 7:30 a.m. with a larger blast at 9:00 a.m. on November 2. The latter blast sent clouds of burning ash that reach the Baeza-Lago Agrio highway.

No victims were reported and people living near the volcano have been evacuated. The last eported eruption of Reventador occurred in 1976. Lahars (Mud flows) are frequently observed during eruptions of this volcano as are extensive lava flows.

The region, is nearly antipodal to the Sumatera earthquake of November 2 and is within the far-field aftershock circle on Canie's map.
