Hi Antonio,

My personal condolences to all who were affected by that earthquake.

Checking my precursor data, a number of fairly clear signals appear to have been pointing to that earthquake. And on October 25 I began circulating an earthquake advisory for one which I thought could do some damage. October 31 was one of days that I pointed to as strong possibilities. Unfortunately my forecasting program points to multiple possible locations for expected earthquakes. In this case I chose the one which looked the most likely and sent my advisories to a country some distance to the east of Italy.

If you check my recent EarthWaves notes and the discussions I am having in the sci.geo.earthquakes Internet Newsgroup you will see that a fairly intensive effort is being made to develop earthquake forecasting technology. Earlier today I sent a formal note to an important international organization informing them that I am planning to send them an earthquake forecasting computer program development proposal in the near future. And on October 30 I stored the first version of a demonstration earthquake forecast data file at one of my Web sites. Some of the purposes of that file are to get input from government officials etc. regarding how they would like to see earthquake forecast data presented to them and how forecasters would like their own data to be displayed.

Efforts are underway. Unfortunately they are obviously not moving along fast enough to save as many lives as we would like.
