Hi All. The Bay Area is starting to look interesting in that the quake activity has picked up a little. Of course we can’t count the explosion at the quarry, or the one at the Geysers, as they are always good for a quake or two at any given time. Of course quakes in the area of Pacifica are always interesting. It’s kind of hard to tell if they are associated with the San Andreas fault, or the San Gregorio fault. Today’s quake makes 25 for the month of Oct with in a 5-mile radius of Pacifica. However there were 28 quakes in Nov. 0f 1991 with most of these occurring on the 18th and 19th. There were 33 quakes in June of 2002, but were scattered through out the month. Nothing outstanding occurred in the Bay Area during those time periods. One day though that may not always be the case. We all know about the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, but what do we know about the quakes before the 1906 quake? The following was taken from a link covering most of the quakes in California and the 1906 quake in particular. I don’t know how accurate it is. “In 1808 there were twenty-one shocks at the Presidio of San Francisco. In 1812 the shocks caused a tidal wave in the bay extending up to the plaza. In 1813 or 1815 `all the buildings' in Santa Clara Valley were shaken down. There were not many and all these were of adobe or sun-dried brick. In 1851, a sharp shock in San Francisco. In 1852, a shock at San Francisco, with a fissure, through which Lake Merced drained into the sea.” I chose just those for the Bay Area, but it covers a lot of the other quakes that have occurred in California including a couple of strong ones in my area so maybe I shouldn’t be so smug about all the creep in my area preventing a major quake from occurring here. A major quake in my area. Nah. Never happen. Famous last words. Take Care…Don, the smug one in creepy town
