Fort Ross, Getting Ready For The Trip

Hi All. While doing some research into the background of the Fort Ross area I found a quake that looked out of place. It was a M>2.6 on 04/08/1984 with a depth of 90.05Km (56.2 miles) At first I thought it might be associated with the Benioff Zone, but learned that it doesn’t come any further south then the MTJ (Mendocino Triple Junction).

For those who don’t know what the Benioff Zone is it is one of the zones of deep earthquake hypocentres whose existence was first demonstrated in 1927 by the Japanese seismologist Kiyoo Wadati. The zones were mapped in the 1940s and 50s by Hugo Benioff. They dip from near surface to a maximum depth of approximately 700 km and are associated with oceanic trenches, island arcs, volcanic chains, and young fold mountains, and are thought to indicate active subduction. Anyway I contacted the Berkeley Seismological Lab and the person I talked to felt that the depth was in error although couldn’t say for sure that it is.

I looked at the route we would most likely take and it doesn’t look all that bad. However my definition of not all that bad and Petra’s definition are two different things. May have to put some blinders on her. They again maybe with Jan in Santa Rosa coming with us she may be distracted enough that she won’t notice the road very much. I’m just teasing her now as she has gotten pretty good at ridding with me. Must be getting use to my driving. However I still haven’t been able to convince her to take another trip up to Lake Pillsbury with me. I will have to agree with her that it isn’t the best road in the world to take if you have bad kidneys, or a bad heart. Take Care…Don in creepy town
