Parkfield Is Looking Less Interesting

Hi All. Well, Parkfield is looking less interesting today. It appears that the dilational strain was bad data because what I saw last night is not there now.

I didn’t feel the 3.0Ml this morning, but my desk lamp did record it. This mornings quake is about a mile from the epicenter of two M>=6.0+ quakes in the 1890s. The first one was a 6.0UK on 04/24/1890 and the second one was a 6.2UK on 06/20/1897.

The Mission in San Juan Bautista sustained some minor damage from the quakes. The Mission does have a shaky history from almost the first day it was established on June 24, 1797.

A strong quake (magnitude unknown) in Oct. of 1800 caused considerable damage to the Mission so the padres took advantage of the opportunity to enlarge the church, and add certain facilities while making the needed repairs.

The area remained quiet until 02/26/1864 when a 5.9UK struck just a little to the north of the 6.2UK. The area continued to have quakes in the M>=5.0+ range with two of the quakes at M>=6.0+ until around 1900. All of the quakes (there were 6) occurred within a 15 mile radius of the 6.2MK in 1897. Take Care…Don in creepy town
